Walk with me but don't look while we change the world.
As much as I identify with being a voice for spicy women shouting from the rooftops and feeling rage about our situation - I generally don't want to be heard. Or seen. And please don't talk to me either. That's a problem when one wants to change the world.
When I notice a women in a dark hoodie, I immediately look more closely. Is she spicy? More often than not I conclude the answer is 'yes'. We seem to prefer not to be perceived. The dark color helps. Bringing up the hood is even better. If the hoodie is oversized, one can pull the hands back into the sleeves or hide inside the pouch.
It feels so good to fade into the background of society. Nobody is judging our outfit or facial expressions. Are we being social enough or too loud? And yet we can't quite disappear. We can't quite stay home all the time.
So while we have to get out of our comfort zone, we might as well sprinkle a little activism. Having a cause always helps me deal with the day-to-day. The message can't be aggressive or weird. We keep it light and most importantly: Interesting.
I'd like to think that today, when I had to get milk at the store, I moved the needle and left a trail of neurodiversity acceptance.
The world is better now. And I'll do more tomorrow. When I have recovered.
